Kids use technology to spread awareness

Good morning friends. I may say that our children are really the hope of the future. Education is very important, that's why all parents should not take for granted the studies of their children.

Anusha B Hegde and Ashwini M of Government Junior College have bagged a prize for their project, `Eradication of Illiteracy'. They were among 14 winners awarded on Wednesday by Intel and the department of state education research and training. Seven schools, 14 teachers and 14 student groups were honoured for effective integration of technology in the teaching-learning process.

Anusha and Ashwini told TOI they were inspired by the movie, `Taare Zameen Par'. Along with classmates, they also started a club, `Akshara Akshaya', in June 2007. "The objective of this club is to spread awareness among students as well as parents about the importance of education." Anusha said.

Swarnakanthi, Kasturi Prabhu and Ramayashree B of Dr K Shivaram Karantha Government School, Putur Nagar, won the award for highlighting issues related to AIDS, like causes, symptoms and preventive measures.

Primary and secondary education minister Visveshwara Hegde Kageri commended the students for doing projects on social issues. He stressed on the need for students to show social responsibility. He said under the 11th Five-Year Plan, `Mahiti Sindhu', a free computer-based education programme, will be implemented in all government schools by next year. "The government will take the help of IT companies for this," he said. However, he also observed that while technology has been beneficial, there have been instances of its misuse.

Dhirendra on Fasting Day -3

Today is August 27, 2008, Wednesday
Today is 3rd day of my fasting. I am on fast from Sunday evening 6-00 pm. Till this moment I just intake water only. I have reason to do fasting and I am going to share here with you all friends. Before I share my reason for fasting I like to let all know about fasting first.

Fasting is primarily the act of willingly abstaining from some or all food, drink, or both, for a period of time. A fast may be total or partial concerning that from which one fasts, and may be prolonged or intermittent as to the period of fasting. Fasting practices may preclude sexual activity as well as food, in addition to refraining from eating certain types or groups of foods; for example, one might refrain from eating meat. A complete fast in its traditional definition is abstinence of all food and liquids except for water.

Fasting for religious and spiritual reasons has been a part of human custom since pre-history. It is mentioned in the Bible, in both the Old Testament (the Tanach) and New Testament, the Qur'an, the Mahabharata, and the Upanishads. Fasting is also practiced in many other religious traditions and spiritual practices.

Fasting is also used in a medical context to refer to the state achieved after digestion of a meal. A number of metabolic adjustments occur during fasting and many medical diagnostic tests are standardized for fasting conditions. For most medical purposes a person is assumed to be fasting after 8-12 hours. A diagnostic fast refers to prolonged fasting (from 8-72 hours depending on age) conducted under medical observation for investigation of a problem, usually hypoglycemia. Fasting has occasionally been recommended as a therapeutic intervention by physicians of many cultures, though it is uncommonly resorted to for this purpose by modern doctors.

Self Consciousness

Self-consciousness is an acute sense of self-awareness. It is a preoccupation with oneself, as opposed to the philosophical state of self-awareness, which is the awareness that one exists as an individual being. An unpleasant feeling of self-consciousness may occur when we realize that we are being watched or observed, the feeling that "everyone is looking" at us. Some people are habitually more self-conscious than others. Feelings of self-consciousness are sometimes associated with shyness or paranoia.

Impairment

When feeling self-conscious, one becomes aware of even the smallest of one's own actions. Such awareness can impair one's ability to perform complex actions. For example, a piano player may "choke", lose confidence, and even lose the ability to perform at the moment they notice the audience. This is a function of the psychological phenomenon of social facilitation. As self-consciousness fades one may regain the ability to "lose one's self".

Adolescence is believed to be a time of heightened self-consciousness. A person with a chronic tendency toward self-consciousness may be shy or introverted.
