India's concerns on non-binding emission cuts have been met at the Copenhagen summit though the climate deal does open a window for a new legal treaty that may kill Kyoto Protocol based on the principle of equity, a top government climate expert said on Monday.

Rejecting allegations that India has succumbed to US pressure at the meet, Rajni Ranjan Rashmi, Joint Director, Environment Ministry, maintained that the way talks were going, India was expecting nothing but equity. "And equity has been ensured by limiting temperature level to 2 degree Celsius which has been agreed by all the nations, both developing and developed," Rashmi, who was part of the Indian delegation at the 12-day meet said on Monday.

The official, while admitting that it was not a win-win situation for India since it was a global accord with positives and negatives in it, said "No binding commitments have been imposed upon the developing nations. This has been a major success for India as promised (by the government) in Parliament.

"Also, survival of Kyoto Protocol has been ensured despite persistent attempt by the European Union to junk its mandate of equity but differentiated responsibilities," he said on the outcome of the Summit.

The third major achievement for India was that it managed to avoid global emission cuts of 50 per cent by 2050 as demanded by the US and other developed nations.

"Hence, while the Summit set a commitment to limit global warming to two degrees Celsius, it did not spell out the important global emission targets for 2020 or 2050 that are the key to holding down temperatures," he said. -Yahoo

While speaking at the summit on Climate Change in the United Nations, the 13-year-old Lucknow girl delivered a strong message to the world leaders on the behalf of the children of the world.

“The Himalayas are melting, polar bears are dying, 2 of every 5 people don’t have access to clean drinking water, earth’s temperature is increasing, we are losing the untapped information and potential of plant species, Pacific’s water level has risen, Is this what we are going to hand over to our future generations? Please......no!,” said Yugratna Srivastava, the ninth grader from St Fidelis College.

Srivastava who addressed the audience consisting of US President Barack Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao along with India representatives like Foreign Minister SM Krishna and Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh, urged the leaders to act quickly on climate change.

She went on to point out that climate change and political policies are two very different elements and asked the leaders to think of the child suffering in greenhouse heat and the species fighting to survive while they sat in their while they sat in their air-conditioned rooms to formulate policies. – One India

Delhiites march on World Environment Day

Good morning friends. in commemoration of the Worlds Environment Day, I also agree that we all have to be aware of it. We should keep our environment clean. That would benefit also to others. We must do our participation even with only little thing. But when it will be together all that little thing will become big.

Scores of activists undertook a march on Friday to raise awareness on World Environment Day.

Dressed in white t-shirts with trees printed on them, they marched through the lanes and parks of the city, to spread awareness on the factors posing a threat to the environment.

"The idea is to be aware of the environment we are living in and do something to save the environment, which is being slightly destroyed by man. I think its our responsibility to do at least something about it," said Ranjani Sreedharan, an activist.

World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972, to stimulate awareness about the environment, and enhance political attention and public action.

The World Bank has expressed alarm at the pollution levels in India, saying air pollution in the country was already "of great concern".

India's current stand on climate change does not please Western countries, who want India to show more commitment towards curbing the rapidly rising greenhouse gas emissions. –The Times of India

It's World Earth Day on Wednesday and young Bangaloreans will celebrate it by encouraging public transport. According to a recent study, private vehicle population in Bangalore is a whopping 20 lakh and growing at 10% per annum. This translates to a jump of 1.01 million tones of GHG emissions in 1997 to almost a double 2.26 million tones in 2007 from the transport sector.

`Energy Brigade - Youth for Energy Revolution', a team of youths from colleges such as Christ, Mount Carmel, St Joseph's, campaigners from Greenpeace and many other concerned individuals will take the Kendra Sarige bus from the Shantinagar main bus stop. They will also distribute details of bus routes of orange and blue line buses to passers-by.

"This is to popularize public transport. We will start from Shantinagar and then stop at Commercial Street, distribute leaflets and bus routes. Earth Day is the best time to tell people about the importance and effectiveness of public transport," said P K Garg, director, projects, BMTC, who will also participate in the initiative.

Environmentalist Suresh Heblikar is expected to travel with the campaigners.
